“The history and geography of Durham Regatta”. I will touch on the history of competitive sport in England as background to the start of the second oldest rowing regatta in Britain. I look at the geography of the river Wear and its importance to Durham. I retell some remarkable stories and mention some key social and technical changes over the regatta’s 190 years of history.

ABOUT ME: Formerly Professor of Geography at Durham University and Principal of Collingwood College. Coached crews on the Tyne and Wear for fifty years. Curated exhibitions about sport at the River and Rowing Museum in Henley, and at the Bowes Museum. Currently leads the Teesdale U3A Geography Group.
This is a joint meeting with Teesdale U3A
